Makers of medical devices were prepared for doom and gloom following a study of obesity drugs and cardiovascular health—but the bearish scenario hasn’t panned out. Photo: Catherine Ivill/Getty ImagesThere is a bit of cognitive dissonance in healthcare investing right now. After reviewing the highly anticipated results from a study of Novo Nordisk’s blockbuster obesity treatment Wegovy released over the weekend, cardiologists at a major medical meeting and the pharma crowd on Wall Street were broadly upbeat. “Today’s confirmatory results lay the groundwork for the coming paradigm shift of metabolic treatment,” gushed Evan Seigerman, an analyst at BMO Capital Markets.

LONDON, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) shares rose 3% on Monday as the market reacted to data the drugmaker presented over the weekend showing that the heart protective benefits of its popular obesity drug Wegovy are not solely due to weight loss. Wegovy is part of a class of drugs that mimic a gut hormone that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite. U.S. companies across sectors such as food and beverage makers have addressed investor concerns on the potential impact to their businesses from the growing popularity of the promising weight-loss drugs. Novo was first to market with its highly effective weight loss drugs. At the close of markets on Friday, Novo's shares were up 47.5% this year.

Wegovy contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient in Novo's type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic. A rising tide for Eli Lilly? Though the study was specifically about Wegovy, Wall Street sees a positive readthrough for similar medications from other providers, particularly Eli Lilly 's Zepbound. Similarly, UBS analyst Trung Huynh called the weekend data a "best-case" scenario for Eli Lilly. And the positive outcomes for both in the Wegovy study can be viewed as encouraging for how Zepbound should perform, the analyst added.

The handful of patients had severe heart disease that had caused chest pain and heart attacks. After trying available cholesterol-lowering medications, they could not get their cholesterol as low as cardiologists recommended. So they volunteered for an experimental cholesterol-lowering treatment using gene editing that was unlike anything tried in patients before. Each had a genetic abnormality, familial hypercholesterolemia, that affects around one million people in the United States. In the United States alone, more than 800,000 people have heart attacks each year.

Private credit goes Hollywood. A town that loves a good story has a leading role in the biggest one on Wall Street. So in that vein, private credit filling the gap left by banks reconsidering their lending decisions is great. Ratings agency Moody's has already raised the alarm, suggesting defaults among borrowers in private credit will rise. But I think it's fair to say that industry isn't as cut and dried as others private credit might be lending to.

Mineralys Therapeutics is on track to succeed within the obesity-related hypertension market, which could translate into major gains for the stock, Credit Suisse said. But Law said data from Mineralys' trial on its oral drug lorundrostat is already showing superior results for obese patients. Law is also optimistic that the drug can perform well in the hypertension market, particularly among obese patients. Though results look strong, potassium levels still appear to be high with lorundrostat, Law said. The stock could get a near-term boost from a potential partnership that comes after the official second-phase results, he said.
Cardiologists said they welcome new options to help patients who can’t benefit enough from statins. New options are emerging for people who are at risk of heart attacks and strokes but can’t take or benefit fully from widely used cholesterol drugs. Despite decades of progress against high cholesterol, as many as 30% of people prescribed the popular cholesterol-lowering pills known as statins don’t take them or have to limit their doses because they can’t tolerate the muscle pain that sometimes comes as a side effect. Others remain at risk of cardiovascular disease even when they are on full doses.
Britain's cardiology departments are a microcosm of the problems that have spread through the system. In November, around 8,000 people like Cogan had been waiting more than a year for heart treatment, up from a couple of dozen pre-pandemic. Reuters GraphicsTeams were still trying to restore cardiac services to pre-pandemic levels, NHS England said. Pandemic disruptions to diagnosis and treatment, in addition to delays in emergency care, had an outsized impact on cardiological care, she said. On one visit to his local Colchester hospital, staff could not find a working ECG machine to read his heart's electrical activity when he felt a twinge.
Cleerly founder and CEO James Min, a cardiologist, started the company to find a better way to assess heart health, by applying AI to the problem. Heart disease is the nation's No. CNBC: What are indirect markers of heart disease? Min: Many emergency department visits for heart attacks are preventable if risk factors for heart disease are identified in advance. Using millions of annotated CCTA images, Cleerly algorithms quantify and characterize atherosclerosis and its features.

While the Bills have not said whether Hamlin was vaccinated, about 95% of NFL players have received a Covid-19 vaccine, according to the league. The blog proves no relationship between the incidents and Covid-19 vaccines; it also includes in its count reported deaths from cancer and emergencies of unknown causes. It' snot surprising that misleading claims about Covid-19 vaccines surged following Hamlin's cardia arrest, given how much vaccine misinformation has spread since the pandemic began, said Jeanine Guidry, a Virginia Commonwealth University professor who researches health misinformation and vaccine hesitancy. High-profile public events like Hamlin’s collapse often create new waves of misinformation as people grasp for explanations. For people concerned about vaccine safety, Hamlin’s sudden collapse served to affirm and justify their beliefs, Guidry said.
A potential cause of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin's jarring collapse and cardiac arrest — witnessed in real time by millions of viewers watching "Monday Night Football" — was immediately recognized by heart experts who also happened to be watching the game. In a statement, the Buffalo Bills has only said that Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest, when the heart stops beating properly, and is now in critical condition. While there are several potential causes for Hamlin's cardiac arrest, cardiologists suggested that a rare phenomenon called "commotio cordis" was to blame. It is in this exact moment, experts say, that a blow to the chest in the exact right place can launch an otherwise healthy person into cardiac arrest. But there are several other reasons a person may go into cardiac arrest.
